USA, private home in Kentfield
Japandi-inspired villa overlooking San Francisco Bay.
Swatt Miers Architects oversaw the renovation of this 1950s California home, where, at the owner’s request, Japandi minimalism meets the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-Sabi — a celebration of imperfection and authenticity.
The entrance is framed by a suggestive koi pond that creates an intimate threshold, priming visitors for the visual impressions that unfold at every turn. Once inside, a succession of sweeping views opens onto San Francisco Bay and Mount Tamalpais. The overall effect is further enhanced by natural illumination that pours through the vast glazing, enveloping the contemporary architecture in light.
Under the direction of Momo Wong, the interior design echoes the project’s Japanese sensibility through the use of refined materials such as oak, paired with sliding or slatted walls.
The living room is furnished with a generous arrangement of the Groundpiece sofa in a light color palette, paired with a Happy armchair upholstered in tobacco color leather and an elegant Filicudi ottoman.
Furnished with a Grandemare sofa and Tessa armchair, a more intimate family living area opens adjacent to the dining room.
On an intimate bedroom balcony, two Tessa Outdoor armchairs with matching side table create a quiet reading nook, while the large terrace is furnished with a Pico Outdoor dining table with stone top and Dafne chairs for alfresco dining.
