Brazil, Angra House

Summer home on the Angra dos Reis coast.

Designed by Studio Arthur Casas, Angra House is the thoughtful renovation of a private oceanfront residence. The project brings landscape and architecture into dialogue, preserving the integrity of the original volumes while introducing modifications to the facade to maximize views of the ocean and Ilha Grande.

Continuous glazing wraps the perimeter of the house, admitting abundant natural light. The interior spaces unfold across five split levels, creating a fluid relationship with the outdoors and keeping the landscape present in every room. This sense of continuity is underscored by the use of natural materials employed on the facade and indoors. Raw stone sourced from the surrounding area strengthens the dialogue with the rocky slope behind the house. Wood lends material depth to the living spaces, while the traditional ceramic-tiled roof and woven-straw ceiling create a tactile counterpoint to the building’s contemporary aesthetic.

The interior design, also by Studio Arthur Casas, further develops this connection through materials like wood, ceramic, and straw, paired with design furnishings and works by renowned Brazilian artists and artisans.

In the expansive first-floor living area, the generously proportioned Grandemare sofa anchors the space, entering into a natural rapport with the surrounding furnishings – wood and glass coffee tables, vases, and ceramic accents.
