John Hutton
American designer John Hutton was born in Massachusetts to Scottish parents. He studied in New York, where he graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, and San Francisco. For 20 years he worked as Design Director for Donghia and, in 1998, founded John Hutton International with Joe Doyle. There, he created the first collection for Holly Hunt.
He attributed his passion for design to the Scottish tradition of great designers and architects. Hutton was known for combining contemporary design with a classical foundation. Sources of inspiration were his travels, museums, music, people and sailboats. Until his death in 2006, Hutton wintered in France and spent his summers on Long Island, NY.
He created more than 200 award-winning designs, many of which are in permanent collections in prestigious institutions like the Brooklyn Museum and the Houston Museum of Fine Arts.
